At this scale the installation has more in common with a small commercial job than a domestic one. 28 to 50 kWh home batteries — common questions
Is there any point going above 50 kWh?
There can be, but not for the certificates. Certificates can only be claimed on the first 50 kWh of usable capacity, so anything beyond that has to justify itself on its own merits — a genuine load, a resilience requirement, an off-grid or edge-of-grid site. Batteries larger than 50 kWh are registered and installed in Australia and there is nothing wrong with them; they are simply outside what the household program was designed to support. If someone is proposing one, the question to ask is what specific load or outage requirement it is answering, and whether the connection at that address will actually permit it.
How many batteries are approved in the 28 to 50 kWh range?

What does the certificate factor of 15% mean for this size?
It is the weighting applied to this slice of usable capacity when small-scale technology certificates are calculated — not a price, and not a figure Thunderman sets. The Clean Energy Regulator applies the full factor to the first band of usable capacity and steps it down for the bands above, so a larger battery does not attract proportionally more support. Certificates are also determined by the date the system is installed rather than the date the contract is signed, and nothing can be claimed beyond the first 50 kWh of usable capacity. What that comes to in money depends on the certificate market on the day and on your installer's arrangements, which is why the figure belongs in a written quote rather than on a web page.
Is nominal capacity or usable capacity the one that counts?
Both, for different things, and quotes mix them up constantly. Nominal capacity decides whether a battery is eligible at all — it has to fall between 5 and 100 kWh. Usable capacity is what the tiers are calculated on and what you actually get to use, and it is always the smaller number. In this range the approved configurations run from 28.3 to 50 kWh usable. If a quote gives you one figure and not the other, ask for both before comparing it against anything.
