Somewhere in this range a battery stops being an appliance and starts being part of the building. Almost everything here is modular — you are stacking cabinets or modules rather than hanging one box on a wall — and that changes the job in ways a spec sheet does not show. The stack has real mass and needs a floor or a footing that suits it, not a plasterboard wall. It needs clearances and a location that satisfies the installation standard for battery systems, AS/NZS 5139, which is stricter about habitable rooms and escape paths than most people expect and is the reason so many of these end up in a garage or on an external wall rather than in the hallway cupboard the owner had in mind. Electrically, this is the band where the switchboard usually does need attention: more isolation, often a dedicated sub-board, and a supply that has to be checked rather than assumed.
Who it suits
And who it doesn't.
It suits a household that has already electrified — heat pump hot water, induction, one or two cars charging at home — and whose evening load is genuinely large enough to empty a smaller battery before morning. It suits a home with the space and the siting to do it properly. It does not suit a house being fitted out speculatively "for the future": paying to store energy you do not yet use is the most common way to make the numbers stop working, and a system sized against last winter's bills beats one sized against an ambition.

14 to 28 kWh home batteries — common questions
Do I need three-phase power for a battery this size?
Not necessarily, and the two questions get confused constantly. Three-phase is about the supply into the property and the load it has to carry; battery capacity is about how much energy is stored. Plenty of homes run a battery in this range on a single-phase supply. What matters is the total load the installation has to carry, whether the distributor will approve the inverter capacity you are asking for at that address, and whether the existing board can accommodate the extra isolation and protection. That is a site assessment, not a table — which is why the answer to "will it work at my place" is a look at the switchboard rather than a number.
How many batteries are approved in the 14 to 28 kWh range?

What does the certificate factor of 60% mean for this size?
It is the weighting applied to this slice of usable capacity when small-scale technology certificates are calculated — not a price, and not a figure Thunderman sets. The Clean Energy Regulator applies the full factor to the first band of usable capacity and steps it down for the bands above, so a larger battery does not attract proportionally more support. Certificates are also determined by the date the system is installed rather than the date the contract is signed, and nothing can be claimed beyond the first 50 kWh of usable capacity. What that comes to in money depends on the certificate market on the day and on your installer's arrangements, which is why the figure belongs in a written quote rather than on a web page.
Is nominal capacity or usable capacity the one that counts?
Both, for different things, and quotes mix them up constantly. Nominal capacity decides whether a battery is eligible at all — it has to fall between 5 and 100 kWh. Usable capacity is what the tiers are calculated on and what you actually get to use, and it is always the smaller number. In this range the approved configurations run from 14.13 to 27.99 kWh usable. If a quote gives you one figure and not the other, ask for both before comparing it against anything.
