What this size does to the house
What a single battery changes, and what it does not.
This is the size most Melbourne houses land on, and it is the one that usually fits the electrical installation you already have. A battery in this range is normally a single wall-mounted or floor-standing unit with one hybrid inverter, and on a standard single-phase supply it rarely forces a service upgrade. What it does force is a decision nobody mentions in the showroom: which circuits stay alive when the grid drops. Backup is not a property of the battery, it is a property of how it is wired. Keeping the whole house alive through an outage means a changeover arrangement and a switchboard that can carry it; keeping the fridge, some lights and a couple of power points alive means an essential-loads sub-board, which is smaller, cheaper to wire and what most households actually end up choosing once they see the two side by side. Who it suits
And who it doesn't.
It suits a household that wants to stop exporting cheap solar in the afternoon and buying it back at night, and that can live with a limited set of circuits during a blackout. It suits an older weatherboard with a modest switchboard, because it asks the least of it. It does not suit a home already running ducted heating, an induction cooktop and a car charger off the same board and hoping the battery will carry all three overnight — that is a bigger battery and, more often than not, a bigger conversation about the supply itself.

Will a battery this size run my whole house in a blackout?
Usually not, and the honest answer is that most people do not want to pay for the version that does. Two things limit it: how much energy is stored, and how much power the inverter can deliver at once. A battery can hold plenty of energy and still not start a ducted air conditioner, because starting current is a different problem from stored capacity. The common arrangement is an essential-loads sub-board — fridge, lighting, a few power points, the internet — which rides through an outage comfortably. Whole-house backup is possible but it changes the switchboard work, the inverter sizing and the approval, so it belongs in the quote from the start rather than as an afterthought.

What does the certificate factor of 100% mean for this size?
It is the weighting applied to this slice of usable capacity when small-scale technology certificates are calculated — not a price, and not a figure Thunderman sets. The Clean Energy Regulator applies the full factor to the first band of usable capacity and steps it down for the bands above, so a larger battery does not attract proportionally more support. Certificates are also determined by the date the system is installed rather than the date the contract is signed, and nothing can be claimed beyond the first 50 kWh of usable capacity. What that comes to in money depends on the certificate market on the day and on your installer's arrangements, which is why the figure belongs in a written quote rather than on a web page.
Is nominal capacity or usable capacity the one that counts?
Both, for different things, and quotes mix them up constantly. Nominal capacity decides whether a battery is eligible at all — it has to fall between 5 and 100 kWh. Usable capacity is what the tiers are calculated on and what you actually get to use, and it is always the smaller number. In this range the approved configurations run from 4.1 to 14 kWh usable.
