Outdoor power points in Victoria: the rules and the weather sense
What makes a power point suitable for outside, why safety switch protection matters more out there, and why running an extension lead across the lawn every summer is the thing to fix.

An outdoor power point needs three things an indoor one does not: a fitting and enclosure rated for the weather at that spot, residual current device protection on the circuit, and a position that keeps it clear of water and mechanical damage. The extension lead across the lawn
Every spring the same thing happens in thousands of Melbourne backyards. The mower comes out, the pressure washer comes out, someone starts on the deck, and a lead goes out through the laundry window because that is where the nearest power point is.
It works. It has worked for years. And it is the arrangement responsible for a surprising share of the problems that show up later: the lead pinched in the window frame until the insulation splits, the lead run under a door and flattened by the door closing on it, the lead sitting in a puddle after a storm blew through while everyone was inside, the lead nicked by the mower and taped up.
None of that is a lecture about being careless. It is what happens to a cable that lives on the ground. A fixed power point in the right place removes the reason to run one at all, and it is a small job compared to the trouble a damaged lead can cause.
What makes a power point an outdoor power point
Three things, and they are worth understanding because they are what you are paying for.
The rating. Fittings are given an IP code that describes what they keep out. The first digit covers solid objects and dust, the second covers water. A fitting on an exposed back wall that catches driving rain from the west has a harder life than one tucked under a deep verandah, and the required level of protection follows the exposure. That judgement is made on site, looking at the actual wall, not from a catalogue.
The enclosure. Outdoor power points sit inside a weatherproof housing with a lid that closes over the plug while something is plugged in. That last part matters more than people expect. A cover that only closes when the point is empty is no use on the day you leave the pump running through a shower of rain.
The safety switch behind it. New work is done with residual current device protection on the circuit, and outdoors is where that device does its hardest work. Inside the house you are usually dry, wearing shoes, standing on timber or carpet. Outside you are on wet ground, often barefoot, holding a metal tool. If your switchboard predates safety switches, an outdoor point is a good moment to sort that out, because the two jobs meet at the same board. Where it goes, and the mistakes that are hard to undo
Position is the part people give the least thought to and regret the most.
Height matters: too low and the fitting collects splash from the ground, gets buried behind a garden bed as the plants fill in, or takes a knock from a wheelbarrow. Too high and you are reaching over your head with a plug in one hand.
Clearance matters too. A power point directly beside a tap, behind where the bin lives, or in the strip of wall a gate swings across is a point that will be damaged or unusable within a couple of years.
And then there is the question nobody asks until afterwards: what is it actually for? A point intended for a pressure washer twice a year is a different proposition to one that will run a pond pump continuously, feed a shed, or carry festoon lighting over a pergola every summer. Continuous loads, distances and anything with its own switching are worth stating up front, because they can change what the circuit needs to look like. Sorting that out at the quote stage costs nothing. Sorting it out after the wall is closed up is another matter entirely.
The certificate, and why you keep it

The practical value is straightforward. The certificate records that the work was carried out by a registered person and that it was tested. Can I put an ordinary power point outside if it is under the eaves?
No. An indoor power point is not built to cope with damp air, driven rain or insects, even in a sheltered spot. Outdoor locations need a fitting rated for the conditions and an enclosure that stays closed over the plug.
Do outdoor power points need a safety switch?
